Lathkill Dale from Monyash 04/07/10

Although the weather wasnt as nice as last week, we set off to Monyash in the White peak area with an additional walker Jo. The first part of the walk was easyish going through lanes until we reached xxx dale and set off across fields until we reached One Ash Grange,a farm that used to belong to Roche Abbey. After passing the farm which had some interesting buildings and a statue of a priest in the garden, the path descended sharply into Cales Dale , which has rocky sides and is heavily wooded. We followed the path down the to the floor of the dale and after a short while came onto the suprising Lathkill Dale itself.(pictured). In complete contrast to Cales Dale, Lathkill is an open limestone sided valley, which reminded me of the Yorkshire Dales. This seemed a good spot to sit on the rocks take in the view and have a snack.

After a break we crossed a wooden bridge over what would have been a river, but it was mostly a dried overgrown bed. we walked up the floor of the Dale, where we watched  a buzzard and several unrecognized hawks or falcons hunting overhead. Further along we came to a fenced off area which contain many specimens of Jacobs Ladder, a common plant in gardens but quite rare in the wild.

We continued walking until we reached a disused quarry which we picked out way across before coming out into pasture which took us to the road to Monyash, we crossed the road and walked around the back of the village to get back to the car.

An interesting walk, easier going than last week but with more variation of scenery, plenty of flowers, and more birdlife, including Buzzard, Swallows, House Martins and Goldfinch.
